PROJECT: Upgrade and expansion of existing welfare and conference facility. Comprising 11 Modular units providing 320 Sq.mtrs of space to accommodate new space for welfare facilities including changing rooms, showers, staff lockers and a new conference centre including kitchen facilities.

CLIENT DETAILS: Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is a global pharmaceutical company with offices across the world. They are committed to providing access to affordable and innovative medicines, and driven by the corporate vision perfectly captured by the slogan/strapline ‘Good Health Can’t Wait’. They integrate deep science capabilities and cutting-edge technology to develop innovative, accessible and affordable therapies for patients worldwide.

Benchmarking manufacturing processes and continuous operational excellence are at the core of their capability to deliver quality medicines to patients in 66 countries. They additionally adopt cutting-edge digital technologies to transform R&D, manufacturing, and supply chain, along with marketing, sales and services.

OVERVIEW: Dr Reddy’s needed additional space to accommodate their growing business in the UK. The existing facilities were inadequate for purpose and needed replacement. Dr Reddy’s went out to tender to four potential suppliers, these were shortlisted to two, both of which were visited for assessment of their capability, based on the impression that was made during the visit they decided to place the business with Springfield.

KEY ISSUES FACED BY THE CLIENT: The siting of the modular units were compromised by the need to install the new units between two existing buildings in close proximity, which created challenges for locating the buildings. Whilst the footprint of the building could be comfortably accommodated in the space between the two buildings, as with all modular units, the individual units would need to be craned into position. However, whilst the site could be accessed via two different bridges, one had a weight restriction and the other a height restriction! This meant that the crane most suited to the task would not meet the limitations of either and an innovative solution was required.

WHAT SPRINGFIELD DID: Springfield worked with Steve Olverman, the Project Manager managing the operation for Dr Reddy’s, to identify precise requirements and ensure that the finished building was absolutely fit for purpose and perfect for their needs. As discussions took place it became apparent that providing an additional space would “future-proof” the building. This resulted in the building growing from 7 units to 11. The problem presented by the bridge weight and height restrictions was overcome by treating the installation as two separate jobs. Leaving the completion of foundation work on one element of the project allowed a smaller “City crane” into an area suitable to complete phase one, the additional foundation work was then carried out and phase two followed a few days later.

SUMMARY & BENEFITS: Dr Reddy’s now has all the welfare and conference space they need for both immediate and future needs with expanded welfare and conference rooms served by all the facilities they could possibly need along with an all-important pharmaceutical site “clean & dirty entrance and exit” access points. Additionally, Springfield now knows exactly how to cope with a project where crane access is compromised, adding to the wide solution base that 50 years of experience bestows.

CLIENT COMMENTS: Steve Olverman, the Project Manager for Dr Reddy’s was kind enough to comment as follows on the installation:

Throughout the project, we found Springfield to be both responsive and accommodating in their approach and would have no hesitation in recommending them to others. This is a quality product at a competitive price and the project was executed in a timely and professional manner both on and off-site. We now know where to go for the next one!”
