Can Offsite Construction Methods Be Used To Help Curb The CO2 Emissions?
In recent years, climate change has become a more prominent concern of the world in which we live. With the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change releasing their report on global warming, urging the international community to take greater steps towards reducing our emissions or suffer irreversible consequences, being aware of our carbon footprint is becoming more important than ever.
Being such a major element of national infrastructure, the construction industry is an important player in the high level of emissions the UK emits. Here we look at how the industry may be affecting climate change, and how turning to offsite construction could be a step towards a more environmentally-friendly sector.
How is the construction industry contributing to climate change?
A recent report published by the BBC revealed the potentially devastating impact the construction industry has in terms of its contribution to climate change. Focusing primarily on our dependence on concrete, and the billions of tonnes of sand and gravel required to maintain this dependence, the piece describes how cement manufacturing alone accounts for 7% of global CO2 emissions. To produce the best type of cement, sand and gravel is taken from beaches and river beds, making coastal communities more vulnerable to damage caused by storms. Most concerningly, the report states how global cement production has soared by 300% since 1990.
The report does offer suggestions on how the construction industry could reduce the amount of raw materials used to aid in the industry becoming more environmentally friendly. Switching to more efficient production methods and improving how buildings are recycled when they are demolished are but some of its proposals.
Is offsite construction more environmentally friendly?
Traditional construction methods are drawn-out processes in comparison to offsite techniques. erHre sa.ndal k;lasmfWith over 45 years of history in the offsite construction industry, we believe our offsite modular building construction is a better option for the environment.
We assemble our modular buildings in our state-of-the-art ISO approve warehouse where we have a greater level of control of how the components of our modular buildings are constructed. No construction method is without waste, but we can recycle many of the resources we use. This extends to the buildings themselves whereby our used modular buildings are available for clients to hire or buy.
Additionally, working in our warehouse means we are not hindered by the weather. Traditional construction is at the mercy of the weather, and some work may have to be redone due to this, which will cause more waste. There is a point where we have to do work onsite, but as all of modular building components have been constructed in our warehouse, the onsite build will take days, which is great news for the environment and our customers.
With our years of experience, we have perfected our production methods to allow for a more efficient way to construct modular buildings; a cheaper price and a quicker deadline. Offsite construction methods could act as a viable step towards reducing CO2 emissions.
