Helping Our NHS with Modular Ward Extensions

Modular construction is an ever-growing method of expansion to help alleviate some of the pressure our health services are under. This method can be used for creating buildings for many purposes, including but not limited to modular pharmacies, portable GP surgeries, waiting rooms and ward extensions.

Ward extensions can provide additional space for whatever each unique hospital needs, whether it is a reception or lounge area, staff changing rooms or storerooms – the list of uses is endless! In this blog we will explore just how useful a modular ward can be.

Why Choose A Modular Hospital Ward?

High-quality, bespoke modular hospital wards can provide your hospital with more working space, so that patients can receive the healthcare that they need. Other benefits include:

  • Rapid design and construction
  • Reduced waiting times
  • Reduced cost
  • Versatile additional space
  • Little to no disruption to patient care and clinical services
  • Significantly reduced lead time
  • They can be specifically adapted for desired medical use
  • Tailored internal and external finishes with safety and appearance in mind
  • Building standards are always met – full compliance with all NHS standards as well as local authority building control and regulation
  • Space can be maximised in constrained hospital grounds
  • Bespoke layouts to suit your patient’s convenience
  • Short, medium or long-term hospital ward design life
  • Buildings can be designed as stand-alone or as a connected part of existing infrastructure

The Applications Of Modular Ward Extensions

South Tipperary General Hospital has just had a 3,300 sq. m, 40-bed modular ward extension fitted. This is the largest modular ward extension in Ireland and has been installed as a two-storey accommodation block. In this case, the ward extension has been designed and installed to feature 40 en-suite bedrooms, reception and lounge areas, kitchen facilities, staff changing rooms, storerooms and drug preparation facilities.

This hospital provides acute general and maternity services, each floor has 20 new bedrooms and the ground floor has been allocated as Surgical 3 as it links directly to the surgical areas of the main hospital. The first floor will be used as a general ward, with bedrooms of varied size to accommodate different uses, such as bariatric, semi and fully ambulant and assisted bedrooms.

Using off-site construction methods, the new hospital facility was manufactured off-site and installed in due course. The entire hospital facility was delivered in less than 12 months, a drastic contrast to more traditional on-site construction methods.

The applications of modular ward extensions are far-reaching. Uses can include acute and emergency wards and assessment units, isolation wards, males and female wards and surgical wards. In addition to this, non-medical facilities can be created such as lounge areas, reception rooms and kitchen facilities to support patients, families and friends and staff alike.
