A Brief History of Springfield

Following our recent announcement, we thought we should first share a brief history of the key events in an action-packed 50 years!

Where it all started!

The multi-million-pound turnover company that is now Springfield arose from a conversation between two employees who were working together as joiners at a caravan manufacturer both with big ideas and entrepreneurial notions.

The impending prospect of redundancy drove the decision to work for themselves and produce the finest caravans on the market.

1973 – The company was started by Ken Britner and his business partner as a caravan manufacturer at Elton Head Road, St Helens. Moved into stackable jackleg and wheeled units (towable welfare units for the construction sector) and subsequently, the first few basic portable cabins and the inception of the highly respected modular manufacturer that we were to become.

1978 – 2011 – Rapid growth created the need to move to larger premises in Merton Bank Road, St Helens. The Merton Bank Road depot grew from one unit to three units to cope with further growth. Ken acquired full control of the business by buying his partner’s shares.

2011 – Present – Moved to the current Abbotsfield Road 40,000 Sq. Ft manufacturing unit with Ken stepping down and passing on responsibility to his daughter Lyndsey who has taken the business from £2.4M in 2011 to £8M+ in the current year and a full order book until mid-summer.

We clearly owe a heartfelt thanks to Ken our founder and patriarch of the Britner family, owners of Springfield. Ken was born in 1940 and sadly left us in 2019. He continued to actively manage the business until his retirement at 70 years when he passed the reins over to Lyndsey.

He is sadly missed by all who knew him, but he left a rich legacy by creating the business that is Springfield!
