PROJECT:

New Double Classroom with central store, a disabled toilet, caretakers office and IT store.

CLIENT DETAILS:

Moor Hey School caters for Primary & Secondary age pupils and were awarded a Secondary specialism as a Mathematics & Computing College (July 2007).

All of their pupils have statements for special educational needs (or new Education, Health & Care Plans); all pupils have some degree of learning difficulty, some require speech and therapy support, a proportion of pupils have autism, visual or hearing impairments, physical difficulties, behavioural, emotional and social problems and specific learning difficulties. Increasingly pupils may have complex needs resulting in a combination of barriers to learning.

When pupils leave the school at the end of Year 11, Moor Hey have always managed to place pupils in either open employment, a suitable training scheme or on a further education course.

OVERVIEW:

Moor Hey School were in urgent need of additional accommodation to cope with rising numbers at their popular & well-respected school. Their requirement was for 2 new classrooms with internal disabled toilet and office space for the caretaker along with secure storeroom facilities for the IT infrastructure. The installation would also have an impact on the surrounding area and necessitate groundworks which added to concern over the safety of building activity in areas that would normally be populated by the children attending the school.

KEY ISSUES FACED BY CLIENT:

Helen MacLenahan, Head Teacher at Moor Hey school, for the reasons outlined above, was keen to work with a Company who could handle the project from start to finish and demonstrate an ability to deliver the necessary landscaping and infrastructure, changes that were a vital part of the installation. It was also crucial that full account was taken of the risks associated with the construction of buildings in a location occupied by vulnerable children. Finally, it was important that the project was completed promptly to enable the school to accommodate the increasing pupil intake.

WHAT SPRINGFIELD DID:

Helen took advantage of the Springfield, peace of mind, full turn-key package which ensured we managed the installation from planning through to project managing the whole process including, groundworks, liaising with utility Company’s and full installation. This allowed Helen to concentrate on her demanding role as Headteacher of an SEN facility without distraction.

The project included the demolition of part of the school and creating new pathways to the school tennis courts along with building secure 7ft solid fencing to give additional security for the pupils during construction. We scheduled the demolition over a half-term holiday and the modular installation during a weekend thereby avoiding any potential danger to vulnerable children & school staff.

SUMMARY & KEY BENEFITS:

Moor Hey now have 2 additional, environmentally friendly, energy efficient, school classrooms to accommodate growing school numbers which were installed at a time convenient to the school removing any risk to the schoolchildren and staff. The pupils can enjoy a bright purpose build learning environment secure in an access-controlled environment. The surrounding areas have also been aesthetically improved with better access to the school tennis courts and the landscaping created to provide level access to the front & side entrance with a ramped access to the opposite side entrance.
