CLIENT: Ingham & Garner Limited – the contractor commissioned by St Helens Council to deliver a refurbishment project at District Primary School, Newton-le-Willows, St Helens, Merseyside along with the provision of a new nursery facility.

PROJECT: Ingham & Garner selected Springfield Modular to construct and install the new nursery element of the project which included 2 classrooms, a kitchen, child toilets, a staff toilet and a plant room in c270 Sq/m of space. The completed project created a new state of the art Pre School and Nursery provision for the community.

CLIENT DETAILS: Main Contractor – Ingham & Garner was the construction company commissioned to complete the project. Since they were established in 1974, they have built up extensive experience working for a number of major clients and local architectural practices, concentrating on healthcare, education and public works projects.

School – The District CE Primary School is at the heart of the local community, with a long history and extensive grounds for the children to enjoy. They provide an inclusive and nurturing learning environment, a bespoke curriculum and excellent pastoral and early intervention support to meet the needs of their children and families.

The School’s District learner values were chosen by the children to reflect their positive attitudes toward learning and excellent standards of behaviour. They welcome children into the District Primary family, from two to eleven years, and aim to provide them with learning experiences and wider enrichment opportunities, which they will cherish for the rest of their lives.  The school provides an extended service offer, including breakfast, after-school club and nursery wrap-around care to provide a valuable high-quality service to meet the needs of many families.

KEY ISSUES FACED: The key issues were the tight time frame imposed on the installation of the building given the obvious dangers posed by a mix of young schoolchildren and a construction site. Springfield worked closely with Ingham & Garner to coincide installation during a school holiday, removing all risk and minimal disruption. The design also posed a challenge given the planning permission specified that the new element of the project featured external finishes sympathetic to the existing school building. Springfield was able to satisfy this critical design element by providing a brick-clad and render finish to the individual modules to provide an aesthetically pleasing and perfect match to the existing structure. An innovative heating system was also specified and installed to future proof the energy efficiency of the building.

WHAT SPRINGFIELD DID: Worked with the Main Contractor to meet a demanding specification in both internal & external requirements and then ensured the installation was carried out during a school holiday to remove all potential risk for the schoolchildren. Included innovative heating that exceeded building regulations by fitting a future proof heating system throughout the build that exceeds current building regulations.

SUMMARY & BENEFITS: The school now has a brand new nursery unit to complement its existing refurbished building to enable the provision of a new facility at the school and extend the services available to the local community. The new building is perfectly in keeping with the surroundings and offers a bright, airy space conducive to the learning experience of the local children.
